One-Handed Operation

Sometimes you have to operate camera controls using only your right hand, for example when the camera is in a sound blimp or your left hand is busy with the zoom ring. To configure the camera for one-handed operation, assign frequently-used settings to the controls on the right side.

Shooting

For smoother one-handed photography, try the button assignments below.

ISO Sensitivity → Movie-Record Button

This assignment lets you adjust ISO sensitivity by pressing the movie-record button and rotating a command dial. ISO sensitivity is displayed in the viewfinder, so you never have to take your eyes from your subject.

To assign ISO sensitivity to the movie-record button, select ISO sensitivity for Custom Setting f13 (Assign movie-record button).

Highlight‑Weighted Metering → Fn/Pv Button

With this option, the camera switches from the current metering method to highlight-weighted metering while the Fn or Pv button is pressed. This lets you capture highlights if, for example, you’re in a theater when the lights go down, leaving your subject suddenly in the spotlight.

To assign highlight-weighted metering to the Fn or Pv button, select Press >Highlight-weighted metering for Custom Setting f4 (Assign Fn button) or f5 (Assign Pv button)

My Menu → (AE‑L/AF‑L) Button

Adding frequently-used items such as White balance, Choose image area, Image quality, or Set Picture Control to My Menu and assigning My Menu to the AE-L/AF-L button lets you access these items using only your right hand. You can choose the items added to My Menu and the order in which they are displayed. For example, if White balance is listed first, white balance will be displayed right after you press the AE-L/AF-L button. If you add Choose image area to My Menu for a stage performance, you can use one hand to switch quickly between FX for crowd scenes and DX for soliloquies.

To assign My Menu to the AE-L/AF-L button, select Press > My Menu for Custom Setting f6 (Assign AE-L/AF-L button).

Use the Monitor brightness option in the setup menu to dim the monitor in theaters and other settings where the light from the screen may be unwelcome.

Playback

Here are some button assignments for smoother one-handed playback.

Playback → Fn/Pv Button

This assignment lets you use the Fn or Pv button to start or stop playback and the multi selector to view other images or display photo information.

To assign playback to the Fn or Pv button, select Press > Playback for Custom Setting f4 (Assign Fn button) or f5 (Assign preview button).

Use the Monitor brightness option in the setup menu to dim the monitor in theaters and other settings where the light from the screen may be unwelcome.

Zoom On/Off → Multi Selector Center Button

With this assignment, you can press the center of the multi selector to zoom in on the active focus point and use the multi selector to scroll the image. Press the center of the multi selector again to exit zoom.

To assign zoom on/off to the center of the multi selector, select “Playback mode > Zoom on/off for Custom Setting f2 (Multi selector center button) and choose the starting zoom ratio from Low magnification (50%), 1:1 (100%), and High magnification (200%).
