Read this section for information on adjusting audio settings when recording sound with movies.
Turn the built-in or external microphones on or off or adjust microphone sensitivity.
1 Select Microphone sensitivity in the -button menu.
With the camera in movie mode, press the button to display the -button menu. Press or to highlight Microphone sensitivity and press to view options.
2 Select the desired setting.
Press or to choose the desired setting and press to select. Choose a setting between 1 and 20 (the higher the value, the higher the sensitivity) or select Auto sensitivity to adjust sensitivity automatically. To disable audio recording, choose Microphone off. Press the button to exit to the shooting display when settings are complete.
Two models of external microphone are available from Nikon:
Enable the attenuator to reduce microphone gain and prevent audio distortion when recording movies in loud environments.
1 Select Attenuator in the -button menu.
With the camera in movie mode, press the button to display the -button menu. Press or to highlight Attenuator and press to view options.
2 Select the desired option.
Press or to highlight the desired option and press to select. Press the button to exit to the shooting display when settings are complete.
Choose the range of frequencies to which the built-in microphone or external microphones respond.
1 Select Frequency response in the -button menu.
With the camera in movie mode, press the button to display the -button menu. Press or to highlight Frequency response and press to view options.
2 Select the desired option.
Press or to highlight the desired option and press to select. If Wide range is selected, the microphone will respond to a wide range of frequencies, from music to the bustling hum of a city street. Choose Vocal range to bring out human voices. Press the button to exit to the shooting display when settings are complete.
Select On to enable the built-in microphone's low-cut filter, reducing noise produced by wind blowing over the microphone (note that other sounds may also be affected).
1 Select Wind noise reduction in the -button menu.
With the camera in movie mode, press the button to display the -button menu. Press or to highlight Wind noise reduction and press to view options.
2 Select the desired option.
Press or to highlight the desired option and press to select. Press the button to exit to the shooting display when settings are complete.
The camera wind noise reduction option does not apply to external microphones. Wind-noise reduction for optional stereo microphones that support this feature can be enabled or disabled using microphone controls.
Adjust the volume for third-party headphones.
1 Select Headphone volume in the -button menu.
With the camera in movie mode, press the button to display the -button menu. Press or to highlight Headphone volume and press to view options.
2 Select the desired setting.
Press or to choose the desired volume and press to select. Press the button to exit to the shooting display when settings are complete.
Sound recorded at high microphone sensitivities may play back at high volumes; particular care should be taken when headphones are used.
